Tim Kinsella (Joan of Arc) and the Holding Pattern - April 29, 2000 @ the rivoli

Tim Kinsella

Considering that I only got four hours of sleep the night before, this concert was very interesting. Only hearing a couple of Joan of Arc songs (care of my lovely boyfriend Mike) I thought..this show will be something to listen to. It was a soft and languid set that had a mixing of two rhythmic guitars. The feedback and sounds that came out of the two guitars was astonishing. Tim and Todd played new and old Joan of Arc songs to make a really interesting set. The calculated guitar playing was amazing. I could say that the set made me a little tired...but I mean my physical state didn't help, but I really enjoyed it. Tim told his tour story of Ottawa. He played a sports bar where only a handful of people were there to see him and the rest were Ally McBeal types who were talking so loud (am I the only one who can't stand that show?) Well I laughed when I heard that. It was nice that he asked for questions and comments between songs, but no one took the opportunity. I guess I just don't think anyone could think of anything to ask him..or maybe we're all just a little apprehensive. Well this show can only be described by the genre of art-rock. One point was really interesting..it sounded as if Tim and Todd were just playing random notes and playing in different time signatures...well it turned out to be a song. Well I'm open to listening to new things..but maybe that was a little too much for me. On the whole, it was an excellent show and I will be happy to see a new Joan of Arc album soon.

The Holding Pattern

This is another band from our wonderful suburb of Mississauga. Unfortunately my hunger caused me to miss some of their set (I'm really sorry guys). Well I love what I heard. Again, in the tradition of art-rock these guys had a melodic mess of crunchy guitars, drums and bass. The guitarists created sounds that sounded like keyboards (I love those pedals) which was really fantastic.
